Compare · Cloud access control
Avigilon Alta vs Verkada Access, from a 15-year integrator.
Two unified video-plus-access plays. Both are NDAA compliant, both are US-headquartered, both bet that one dashboard wins. The deciding factor is usually which camera platform you are already on.
- NDAA-compliant
- Platform-agnostic
- 1,000+ deployments over 15 years
Pick Avigilon Alta for cloud access control paired with Avigilon video on one platform, the strongest mobile credential experience in the category, and Apple Wallet plus Google Wallet support out of the box. Pick Verkada Access when you are already on Verkada cameras and want one single-pane dashboard for video and access. Both are NDAA Section 889 compliant. Both are US-headquartered.
§01 At a glance
What separates them.
Pick the row that matches your biggest constraint. Capability claims are sourced to each vendor's published product documentation and NDAA Section 889 statements.
| Criterion | Avigilon Alta | Verkada Access |
|---|---|---|
| What you are actually buying | Cloud access control (formerly Openpath) plus the option to tie in Avigilon video. The Alta platform is the unified video plus access dashboard. | Cloud access control as a module within Verkada Command. Bundled with Verkada cameras, intercom, alarms, and guest. Same dashboard, same vendor. |
| Reader hardware | Avigilon Alta Readers (Wave, Wave Edge, Mullion). BLE, NFC, mobile credential, and physical card support. Designed for mobile-first deployments with fallback to fobs and cards. | Verkada Access readers (AD32, AD33). BLE, NFC, mobile, plus physical card support. Tightly integrated with the Verkada video stack and Command app. |
| Mobile credentials | Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support out of the box. Wave-to-unlock is one of the most polished mobile-credential experiences in the category. | Mobile credentials via the Verkada Pass app. Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support added more recently. Good UX, but Alta leads on this axis. |
| Video integration | Native with Avigilon Alta video and Avigilon Unity. Door events tie to video clips automatically. Cardholder records and video timelines live in one Alta dashboard. | Native with Verkada cameras. Door events surface in Command alongside the camera feed for that door. Single-pane video plus access is the core pitch. |
| NDAA Section 889 | Compliant. Avigilon Alta is part of Avigilon (Motorola Solutions), headquartered in Chicago, IL. | Compliant. Verkada is US-headquartered in San Mateo, CA. |
| Pricing model | Per-door cloud subscription plus reader and controller hardware. Per-camera Alta video subscription if you add video. No on-prem option. | Per-door SaaS license plus reader hardware. Bundled with the broader Verkada SaaS license for video. Module pricing across the stack. |
| Open API and integrations | Open API. Integrates with HR systems, identity providers (Okta, Azure AD), and visitor management. SCIM-based provisioning for onboarding and offboarding. | Open API for access events. SSO via SAML, SCIM user provisioning, integration with major IdPs. |
| Multi-site management | Single dashboard across all sites and doors. Designed for portfolios of dozens to hundreds of buildings. | Strongest single-pane multi-site experience in the category for sites already on Verkada cameras. Door schedules, cardholders, and video stream from one Command dashboard. |
§02 Where Avigilon Alta wins
Pick Avigilon Alta when these matter most.
Wave-to-unlock mobile credential UX
Wave-to-unlock with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support is one of the most polished mobile access experiences in the category. Tenants and employees onboard faster, fewer support calls about lost fobs, cleaner deprovisioning. Class A office, multi-tenant residential, and modern workplace deployments feel this most.
Unified Alta video plus access in one stack
Deploying access control alongside Avigilon Alta video puts both on one dashboard with one cardholder record and one event timeline. Door events tie to video clips automatically.
Identity provider integration
Mature integration with Okta, Azure AD, and other IdPs via SCIM. Organizations with strong IT identity practices onboard and offboard through their existing identity stack, which improves the audit posture.
Multi-tenant building support
Alta has deep multi-tenant features: tenant-isolated administration, branded resident apps, package room and amenity integrations. For office buildings, mixed-use developments, and residential portfolios, the depth is better than Verkada Access today.
§02 Where Verkada Access wins
Pick Verkada Access when these matter most.
You are already on Verkada cameras
With a Verkada camera footprint, adding Verkada Access is the simpler buy. One vendor, one dashboard, one support relationship, one app on every operator's phone. The cross-product integration is tight by design.
Single-pane Command across the full stack
Verkada Command is the dashboard for cameras, access, alarms, intercom, and guest. For thin security ops teams running multi-site retail or campus portfolios, the single-pane simplicity is hard to match with loosely-coupled stacks.
Bundled procurement and warranty
Adding Verkada Access on an existing Verkada video buy is one PO, one renewal cycle, one customer success contact. Verkada's 10-year hardware warranty extends across the camera lineup, and the reader hardware sits in the same product family.
Greenfield with no existing access platform
With no existing access control and no Avigilon video, and a goal of one vendor for everything, Verkada Access plus Verkada cameras is the cleanest single-vendor buy. Alta is competitive but requires evaluating Alta video as the camera partner.
§03 Architecture
Two unified-stack plays. Different camera partners.
Both bet on the same thesis: video and access belong in one dashboard with one cardholder record. The difference is the camera partner. Alta runs with Avigilon Alta video, Avigilon Unity, or third-party cameras. Verkada Access runs with Verkada cameras only.
With no camera commitment yet, the access decision becomes a camera decision. Already on Verkada cameras, Verkada Access is the simpler path. Evaluating Avigilon video for analytics depth or the Motorola Solutions tie-in, Alta access lands in the same buy. Each side requires you to be on its camera platform to get the full benefit.
- → Avigilon Alta: cloud access plus optional Alta or Unity video. Apple Wallet plus Google Wallet support.
- → Verkada Access: cloud access as a module in Verkada Command. Bundled with Verkada cameras, intercom, alarms.
- → Camera commitment determines fit: Verkada cameras tilt Verkada Access. Avigilon or no commitment tilt Alta.
§04 Mobile credentials
Where Alta still leads.
Apple Wallet and Google Wallet integration moved from nice-to-have to a serious procurement criterion, especially for Class A office and multi-tenant residential where tenants expect a consumer-grade experience.
Alta led on this from its Openpath days and keeps the polish advantage. Wave-to-unlock (wave a hand near the reader, the door unlocks via BLE) plus Apple Wallet and Google Wallet are mature and well-deployed. Verkada Pass is good, with both wallets added more recently. Where mobile UX is the primary value driver, Alta is the safer pick. Where the single-pane Verkada experience matters more, the parity is close enough that it rarely flips the decision.
Questions buyers ask us
FAQ
- Are Avigilon Alta and Verkada Access both NDAA Section 889 compliant?
- Yes. Avigilon Alta is part of Avigilon (Motorola Solutions), US-headquartered in Chicago. Verkada is US-headquartered in San Mateo, CA. Both publish NDAA compliance documentation and are approved for US federal-touching deployments. Neither appears on the FCC Covered List.
- Can Avigilon Alta integrate with cameras other than Avigilon?
- Yes. Alta access integrates natively with Avigilon Alta video and Avigilon Unity, and with third-party cameras through the open API. The deepest integration (door events tied to video clips, cardholder timeline across both) is with Alta video. Third-party integration covers basic event correlation.
- Can Verkada Access work with cameras other than Verkada?
- Not natively. Verkada is a closed ecosystem. Verkada Access is a module within Verkada Command, which runs Verkada cameras only. For access control that pairs with non-Verkada cameras, evaluate Alta access or Brivo with your camera vendor of choice.
- Which has the better mobile credential experience?
- Alta leads. Wave-to-unlock, Apple Wallet, and Google Wallet support are mature and well-deployed. Verkada Pass is good and has added both wallets more recently. Where mobile UX is the primary criterion (Class A office, multi-tenant residential, modern workplace), Alta has the edge. Where single-pane Verkada simplicity matters more, the parity rarely flips the decision.
- Can I run both Alta and Verkada Access at different sites?
- Yes, a common multi-vendor pattern. Verkada Access at sites already on Verkada cameras where single-vendor simplicity matters. Alta access at sites with Avigilon cameras or multi-tenant buildings where the mobile-credential UX or multi-tenant features decide it. The tradeoff is two access dashboards instead of one.
