Start with the locations, camera and door inventory, coverage gaps, network, and required installation date. Identify the site checks needed before final pricing.
Define the installation and purchasing requirements
Separate required equipment, cabling, configuration, recurring services, and customer responsibilities. If a grant is involved, review the approved scope and procurement conditions without assuming an award is available to spend.
Sequence around the school calendar
Agree work hours, building access, interruptions, and phases with school staff. Summer and other breaks may suit major work; authorized service and smaller upgrades can follow a different schedule.
Test the agreed functions
Check camera views, recording retrieval, door operation, user permissions, and any supported alerts or integrations. Record exceptions and the work needed before acceptance.
Train staff and document support
Provide the agreed equipment records, operating instructions, and staff handoff. Identify who administers access, retrieves footage, handles faults, and contacts the service team.

§04 Compliance buyers ask us about
Requirements to confirm before installation.
The Department of Education explains that a video may be an education record when it is directly related to a student and maintained by the school or a party acting for it, subject to exclusions. The school determines its obligations; Tec-Tel scopes recording, permissions, and retention to the approved requirements.
These programs have different applicants, cycles, eligible costs, and purchasing conditions. Confirm the official program guidance, approved award, matching funds, reimbursement terms, and authorization before ordering. Funding research is separate from an installation-ready project.
Have the institution identify its applicable reporting, privacy, records, and emergency-response requirements. Document the camera coverage, storage, access permissions, and supported integrations the installation must provide.
Define purchasing approvals, equipment documentation, work hours, testing, staff training, and service responsibilities. A security installation does not by itself establish institutional compliance.

- How much does a K-12 school security upgrade cost?
- Cost depends on the buildings, camera views, controlled doors, cabling, network, recording, software, and existing equipment. Share the locations, current system, required work, budget range if known, and target date. Tec-Tel can identify the site information needed for an itemized scope and phased installation.
- Can grants pay for our security upgrade?
- Some eligible costs may be funded, depending on the program, applicant, award, and purchasing rules. Funding is not guaranteed and an award does not prove money is available to order equipment. The official FY2026 SVPP guidance requires at least a 25% local cost share and lists the cycle as closed. Use the grants directory and official sources for current conditions. If you have an approved project budget, discuss installation directly.
- How does this work with FERPA?
- Not every image of a student is an education record. Department of Education guidance uses a directly-related-to-a-student and maintained-by-the-school test, with exclusions including certain law-enforcement-unit records. The institution determines the applicable access, disclosure, and retention requirements. Tec-Tel can configure the agreed recording, permissions, and retention settings; no blanket retention period or consent rule is assumed.
- Can you install during the school year?
- Installation timing depends on the agreed work, building access, operating hours, and interruption limits. Major work can be phased around breaks. Service and smaller upgrades may be possible during the year with school approval.
- Do you integrate with our existing safety platform?
- We review the exact access-control, visitor-management, paging, and video products, versions, and supported interfaces. Compatibility, required licenses, failure behavior, and testing need confirmation before an integration is included in the project.
