ISN basics
ISN, formally ISNetworld, is a contractor-compliance management platform headquartered in Dallas. Industrial owners pay a subscription, define the safety, insurance, and training thresholds their site requires, and use ISN to vet the contractors they hire against those thresholds. Contractors pay an annual fee, submit documentation, get a graded profile, and become visible to every ISN-subscribing buyer.
The shorthand "ISN-certified" is what shows up in procurement conversations and RFPs. Strictly, ISN's term is "accredited" or "in compliance," and the grade is per-buyer rather than a single stamp. Either way, the working meaning in the field is the same: this contractor has been audited and is cleared to work the site.

Why industrial buyers require ISN
A camera install on an active manufacturing floor carries a different risk profile than one at a corporate office: forklifts, lockout-tagout zones, confined spaces, overhead hazards. A contractor injury triggers OSHA reporting, workers' comp claims, and sometimes a production shutdown. The buyer's EHS team can't afford to discover their integrator's safety program two weeks into the install.
ISN exists because that pre-qualification used to happen 200 times a year per plant, each procurement lead chasing the same insurance certs and OSHA logs from a different vendor every week. Standardizing it to one platform means EHS sets the rules once, ISN runs the audits, and procurement makes a clean yes-or-no call from the graded profile. For integrators, that's a binary: on the approved list before the bid goes out, or not in the conversation. Buyers don't reroute a camera RFP around an ISN gap.
What ISN audits cover
Mostly documentation review, with grading layered on top. The major buckets:
- Insurance. Certificates of insurance for general liability, auto, workers comp, umbrella, and any specialty coverage. Limits vary by buyer; $5M umbrella is a common ask on industrial sites.
- OSHA stats. TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate), DART rate (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred), fatalities, and lost-time injuries by year. Buyers set thresholds; below 1.0 TRIR is broadly competitive in low-voltage and security contracting.
- MSAQ. Management System Assessment Questionnaire. Roughly 200 questions covering written safety programs, hazard communication, fall protection, hot work, electrical safety, confined space, lockout-tagout, PPE policy, and incident reporting.
- RAVS. Review and Verification Services. ISN's team reads each written safety plan and grades it (A-F) against the buyer's specific requirements. RAVS is where many contractors lose ground; a generic OSHA template won't grade well against a refinery operator's expectations.
- Training records. Evidence of OSHA 10, OSHA 30, first aid / CPR, and any site-specific training the buyer requires (TWIC for ports, NFPA 70E for high-voltage zones, site-specific orientation).
- Drug and background. Written policies plus evidence of execution, often a sample of recent records.
- MSAs and indemnity. Buyer-specific Master Service Agreement plus indemnity, hold-harmless, and waiver of subrogation language. Often the longest part of the onboarding.
The verification process timeline
Zero to ISN-accredited is a multi-month process for a new contractor. Realistic timeline:
- Weeks 1-2. Subscribe, populate the company profile, upload insurance certs, OSHA logs, and existing training records.
- Weeks 2-6. Complete the MSAQ. This usually triggers internal work to formalize policies that previously lived in someone's head.
- Weeks 4-10. Submit written safety plans for RAVS review. Iterate. RAVS sends back redline feedback, contractor revises, resubmits.
- Weeks 8-12. Buyer-specific MSAs and site-specific requirements. Multiple buyers means multiple rounds.
- Annually. Renewal: refresh insurance, update OSHA stats, re-attest to MSAQ items, address any RAVS deltas.
Mature contractors run this as a continuous program. The integrators who scramble are the ones treating it like a once-a-year fire drill.
How to evaluate a non-ISN integrator
If you're considering an integrator that isn't on ISN, you're essentially deciding to do the audit yourself. A short checklist of what to ask for in writing before the install:
- Three years of OSHA 300 logs and the calculated TRIR / DART rates.
- A written safety program covering at minimum: hazard communication, lockout-tagout, fall protection, electrical safety, PPE, and incident reporting.
- OSHA 10 or 30 training records for every tech who'll be on site.
- Certificates of insurance with your facility named as additional insured, including waiver of subrogation.
- A written drug and background screening policy plus a sample of recent records.
- Recent project references in a comparable industrial setting.
If the integrator produces all six in 48 hours, they're running a real safety program. If any takes a week or comes back fuzzy, that's the signal you'd have caught with ISN in the first place.
