What viAct is

viAct is a computer-vision platform aimed at construction, industrial, and workplace safety. The company publishes a large library of analytics modules for conditions such as missing PPE, entry into restricted areas, unsafe proximity between people and equipment, near misses, work at height, housekeeping, and other EHS use cases. It is designed to analyze compatible CCTV or IP camera feeds and deliver events to a dashboard or alert workflow.

The platform is an observation and workflow tool, not a substitute for a safety-management system. It may help a team see selected observable conditions sooner or review patterns across sites. It cannot replace engineering controls, training, supervision, worker reporting, incident investigation, or the employer's responsibility to correct hazards.

A purpose-built platform does not make every module equally relevant. Start with a hazard that appears in the site's risk assessment and a response that can realistically occur. If a camera cannot see the condition or the organization cannot act on an alert, adding more analytics creates noise instead of safety value.

What a viAct deployment requires

  1. Select the safety condition: identify the hazard, work area, applicable procedure, responsible team, and desired response.
  2. Validate camera coverage: test field of view, distance, lighting, occlusion, worker density, equipment movement, and stream quality.
  3. Choose the architecture: confirm where processing runs, how streams reach it, what data leaves the site, and how outages are handled.
  4. Configure the workflow: set zones, schedules, thresholds, alert destinations, verification, escalation, and event retention.
  5. Measure the pilot: review useful verified events, nuisance alerts, missed test events, response time, and user feedback.

Near-miss analytics deserve extra care. A camera may help identify observable proximity or movement conditions, but site layout, equipment telemetry, speed, blind spots, operating rules, and human review can all affect interpretation. Alerts should feed investigation and prevention, not be treated as a complete factual record on their own.

Privacy and workforce considerations

Workplace video analytics can affect employees, contractors, and visitors. Before rollout, the organization should document purpose, access, retention, acceptable use, security, notice, and any required consultation with legal, labor, privacy, or worker representatives. The project should minimize collection and access to what the safety purpose requires.

Tec-Tel addresses the technical controls within the project: camera scope, network segmentation, account permissions, processing location, retention settings, alert recipients, and auditability. The customer remains responsible for determining the policies and legal basis appropriate to its workforce and jurisdictions.

  • Can current cameras see those conditions reliably?
  • Where will video and event metadata be processed and retained?
  • Who verifies an alert and what corrective action follows?
  • How are nuisance events, model updates, audit, and change control handled?
  • What privacy, labor, notice, access, and retention rules apply?
